Neverwinter Review
I discovered my favorite quest in Neverwinter around level 30, when I was overlooking a burning pit with my dungeon clan scattered around me. And suddenly it hit me: I couldn't stand these people. I got sick of not being able to keep up with the tank's aggro and the mage's smart commentary and so I killed them and looted them. Like Michael Douglas in Falling Down, I somehow became the bad guy – even the boss – prompting a group of five adventurers to rush in and try to take me down. (I have no idea what I would have missed.) It was great, innocent fun that you don't find in most other MMORPGs, especially free-to-play ones. And here's the really amazing thing: I was playing a user-created dungeon called Tiered of Being the Hero. For all the flaws stemming from Neverwinter's dogged linearity, its high-cost cash shop, and overreliance on paradigms, developer Cryptic gives us all the tools to create a more memorable dungeon experience than its big-budget cousins. Who needs to raid a fantasy MMO when you can create scenarios like this?
Cryptic certainly at least gets the high-fantasy atmosphere of Dungeons & Dragons, but Neverwinter isn't a very pretty game outside of some breathtaking scenery. The character models themselves look like holdovers from the PlayStation 2 era, though they're very customizable and the world itself is full of little surprises. Most notably, Neverwinter has a physics system that is missing from most other MMOs. Strike your sword on a barrel or hit a tapestry - and shock after shock - they move! (Well, you can't sit in a chair.) Where Neverwinter's visual failings are most noticeable is the sad fact that my character's armor and weapon models barely changed at the 60 level cap throughout my trek. With my helmet and cloak, I can take a screenshot of my Warrior at 55 and claim he's level 25, and few people will be the wiser.
