"Federation: The First 150 Years" is basically a universe textbook based on other technical manuals and history books from Star Trek. It goes so far in its character that there is a fake bibliography referring to other non-existent books of future history. Its purpose is to form the Star Trek franchise, the Interplanetary Government of the United Federation of Planets, and to outline its first year.

Previous books such as "Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology", which was the main inspiration for this book, have tried to do this before but have become obsolete due to Star Trek's growing on-screen canon. The most notable reason for this is the television series "Enterprise" which aired in the previous history of the federation which was once just a field of fan-imagination and speculation-imagination.

The book has been quite successful in combining old ideas with the new Canon Fact, and the author has spent a lot of time explaining some of the obvious inconsistencies and problems caused by "Enterprise" in particular. The Romulan War chapter is one of the highlights and details that can last for most of the last two seasons of the show.

Unfortunately most of the fun in books like "Spacefight Chronology" comes from the fact that they filled the void of an era that was sometimes mentioned, we knew absolutely nothing. Thanks to "Enterprise" which already serves as a brief refresher course of major events of most sizes in this book, events that Star Trek fans already know so much about. Romulan is the only part of the war and the early federations that give us a glimpse of a Star Trek that we have yet to see outside of the work of novels and fans, and it is not surprising that these non-canon sections are probably part of the most interesting book.

Once you get past that book, it continues to provide a brief overview of important Canon events, with the exception of some characters who were not our heroes behind the scenes, playing important roles in history. It has given a new perspective to some of the incidents but none has been exceptionally expressed.

Another nice touch that the textbook lends to Vibe is the copy of the document that helps to color the various foreign races and historical figures. Most of them look as simple as other general reviewers and anyone can create with access to Adobe InDesign but many were cleverly written and I appreciate their presence. Of course the book comes with extra letter bonus content that didn’t make it into the book. These are rarely necessary and it seems that they can be easily edited in the book instead of the extra book although the clarity of the trail ends up being scanned and identified by his colleagues. Cochrane's Warp 5 speech, written on an envelope, also has a clever strategy and a nice matte Jeffrey blueprint for the pilot version of the original series USS. Enterprise. If you have display space, the talking stand that the book brings is clear, but in the end it adds nothing to the value.

A lot has been said about the art and I must say that you will like it or hate it. The book has real art instead of just screen shots from the show which gives it a more authentic and cosmic feel. Some of the paintings are much better than others but some of the starship pictures are quite beautiful though. Bad art has surpassed good art, mostly due to the previously mentioned InDesign document, but there are still some wonderful parts to the book.

Although I enjoyed reading it I finally think it’s a missed opportunity. Goodman was either too scared or too reluctant to add too much non-canon information because at the end of "Enterprise" and at the beginning of the original series there was a lot of time for the feeling of just touching and a lot of gaps had to be filled. Other details of this work are obscure, while he mentions how many world federations have been included, as his new entrant at the end of the book, he never gives so much as a list of those planets and rarely mentions significant except the major powers. There are many more mysteries and many more races that we know very little about that can be broadened as The History of the Federation.

It is also a very human-centered history of federations related to other races. With the exception of the history of the earth we get the most information about the Vulcans but much less about the Andorians and the Tailorites.
