Why Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War
In Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War, all of the grotesque villains, monsters, and undead pirates from the movies coalesce into one of the spookiest action-strategy mobile games you can play in celebration of Halloween. The game allows you to build up your headquarters, fortify various defenses and structures, build ships (Davy Jones’s ghostly Flying Dutchman), and most importantly, conquer the open seas and fell all manner of terrifying sea creatures raring to rip your fleet to splinters.
My time with the game has been a lot of fun, particularly because the gameplay systems in place are so well-designed and compelling. There’s always a building to level up, a new ship to build, a new mission to take on—like the best mobile games, Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War can be one heck of a time killer. But what’s really compelled me as of late is all of the creepy creatures and enemies you’ll find waiting for you during your adventure.
All of the monsters you’ll find terrorizing the open seas are fully realized and incredibly detailed. The mutated whale is one of the most intimidating monstrosities you’ll encounter, with its open wounds leaving its rib cage exposed, its tentacles and razor-sharp teeth like something out of a nightmare. Mermaids, one of the most common enemies in the game, are revolting—their gaping maws are lined with fangs, and their ghastly gills and fins make them a particularly frightening addition to the game. And don’t get me started on the cursed wanderers, who seem to have been lost at sea for so long that they’ve sprouted lobster claws for hands and sport particularly gross-looking goatees.
Disney has launched it’s newest mobile strategy game Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War, where you’ll find familiar faces that we’ve been missing since the last installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Start off by creating and naming an avatar to assist Captain Jack and Mr. Gibbs in creating strategic ways to build islands, hire crews to man your fleets, and battle creatures in the deep. You might even run across a few characters that you’ll encounter in the new movie!
When they say this is a strategy based game, they weren’t kidding. In the beginning, there are prompts to help you understand the game. But when they go away and you’re on your own, it gets a little more difficult. I’ve been playing this game for a few days now and still don’t feel like I’ve got a good grasp on what to do. I see the story advancing, but I’m not quite sure how it’s happening. I do appreciate the guidance from characters I already know, and I like learning more about aspects of the new movie. I’m not terribly proficient in complex strategy mobile games, but I’m sure someone that knows more about this genre would really appreciate it.
In downloading this game, there are few things you should know. First, it takes up quite a bit of storage on your phone. I was quite surprised how much it took just to operate the game, but then as you advance, it will require you to accept an agreement that you understand just how much data and storage it will take. Something else I’ve never run into was all the permissions. It wanted access to my photo’s, which I understand, but it also wanted access to my phone contacts and manage my calls, which I was surprised at as I’ve never encountered anything in the game that has needed that information. Another thing to note was the in-app purchases — there were a lot! If you let your child play this game, just be aware that it’s easy to purchase things in this game and they are quite expensive.

Pirates of the Caribbean is one of those franchises that never seems to die. Just like the undead pirates, the movies have had this weird longevity that common sense can’t seem to explain. So with the latest movie comes yet another spin-off game for those really looking to have more Pirates in their lives.
And that’s where Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War comes in. From JoyCity Corp. the game is a simulation/strategy title for the android, iOS, and Facebook Gameroom platforms. The game puts you in the middle of Jack’s campaign against the East India Trading Company who seeks to eliminate piracy. As one of the pirates who was contacted by Sparrow, your task is to build up your base of operations to fight against the East India Trading Company, while at the same time trying not to be killed by the other pirates surrounding you.
I see a lot of potential in the weeks ahead for this game and hope they can tie up some loose ends and really clean it up. This game is a great segue into the new movie and I’m excited to see what else Captain Jack has up his sleeve. Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War is now available on the Apple App Store and Google Play now
